Électricité de France (EDF) generated 139.7 billion euros in revenue in 2023, an increase of nearly 70 percent in comparison to 2020. However, EDF’s net debt increased as well, amounting to over 50 billion euros in 2023.
A multinational company
The French utility is one of the largest worldwide, and it was the biggest electric utility for sales revenue in the world in 2023. Since June 2023, the French government owns 100 percent of the company, which is headquartered in Paris, France. Although this company contributes to generation capacity all over the world, most of its revenue is generated in Europe and most notably in France.
EDF, France, and nuclear power
The main source of EDF’s electricity generation is nuclear power, but this company also generates and distributes renewable energy. France has always been one of the largest consumers of nuclear energy in the world. Still, because of a technical revision due to stress corrosion, EDF nuclear fleet was not fully operational in 2022 and 2023. The decrease in electricity production combined with the regulations set by the French government to protect energy costumers during the 2022 energy crisis caused EDF to report record losses in 2022.
